What really motivates employees?

In an increasingly more competitive workplace, over and over again we see that the companies that get the results, the press, the reputation, and the profits are those companies which have somehow managed to get a workforce of motivated, engaged employees who not only do amazing work, but who seemingly love what they are doing.

The question then for any organization is how to we motivate our employees to that level? How can we get the entire organization engaged and eager to come to work?
